How to Protect Your Eyes from Excess Light in the Grow Room Using LED Glasses

LED Glasses
LED Glasses

Are you growing plants in an indoor grow room?

If so, then you need to take the necessary steps to protect your eyes with LED Glasses .

This can be done by investing in a good pair of LED grow room glasses.

Not only will these glasses help to protect your eyes from the glare of the LED lights, but they can also help to block out UV radiation.

UV Radiation can damage your eyesight.

In this blog post, we’ll explore how to choose the right LED glasses for your grow room and why it’s important to wear them and why.

The dangers of excess light

When exposed to a high intensity light, such as that found in a grow room, the rods and cones of our eyes can become strained.

This can cause permanent damage to the eye, and lead to eye fatigue, headaches, and more.

It is therefore important to protect our eyes when in a grow room, by wearing protective sunglasses known as “grow room sunnies.”

These sunglasses help to reduce the amount of light that reaches the eyes, reducing the strain on them and protecting them from any potential damage.

The importance of protecting your eyes

When it comes to setting up a successful grow room, protective eyewear is a must.

Too much light can lead to permanent eye damage and even blindness. That’s why it’s important to take every precaution possible when working in your grow room.

Investing in a pair of quality led grow room glasses, also known as grow room sunnies or grow room glasses. Eye Protection in grow rooms will help protect your eyes from the intense LED light used to stimulate plant growth. These glasses are designed to block out most of the harmful UV rays that can cause damage to your eyes.

They come in a variety of styles, colors and lenses and are comfortable enough to wear for extended periods of time.

The best way to protect your eyes while in the grow room

The most important way to protect your eyes while in a grow room is to wear protective eyewear. The best option are LED grow room glasses, which are specifically designed to shield your eyes from the powerful and damaging light emitted by LED grow lights. These glasses are lightweight and comfortable, making them easy to wear during long hours in the grow room.

LED glasses are constructed with specialized lenses that filter out most of the harmful UV rays. Additionally, they provide a clear vision so that you can accurately tend to your plants without straining your eyes. Furthermore, they can reduce glare and create a more pleasant working environment in your grow room.

Investing in a pair of LED grow room glasses is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself and your plants. Wearing these protective glasses will ensure that you don’t cause damage to your eyes and can work comfortably in the grow room for extended periods of time.

LED Grow Light Buyer’s Guide

Buying guide to grow lights

How to choose your grow light can be extremely confusing, even with all the information out there on the internet. A good LED Grow Light Buyer’s Guide will help you learn how to evaluate grow lights that may look great on paper, but fail to deliver where it really counts – in your plants! Below is some advice on how to know what a truly great LED grow light looks like, and why it’s not just important, but essential that you choose your grow light carefully.

Efficiency

There was a time when choosing a grow light was simple – all you needed to know was what brand and wattage you wanted. Things have changed. Drastically. The market has been flooded with grow light options and it can be quite challenging to figure out which light is best for you. Below is some advice on how to know what a truly great LED grow light looks like.

Micromole per Joule

The industry standard for measuring grow light efficiency is micromole per joule (sometimes written as umol/j, μmol/j, umolj-1 or PPF/W). That means that for every joule of electrical energy (joule = watt * second) a certain number of photon micromoles are produced. One micromole = 602,000,000,000,000,000. That’s a dizzyingly large amount of photons!

Highly efficient LED grow light range from 1.5 μmol/j and up (this number is constantly improving). Many of the most efficient LED grow lights are low power and, as a buyer, you may have to weigh out whether you are looking for efficiency or intensity, because at times one can be at the sacrifice of the other. Top brand HPS (high pressure sodium) lights are around 1.7 μmol/j. And while LED grow lights get more expensive than their HPS counterparts, they pay off in the long run with increased efficiency and much less heat output. Choosing an LED based grow light will save you money on both electricity bills and replacement bulbs.

Wall Plug Efficiency

LED grow lights are one of the most efficient types of grow lights available. They use about 50% of the electricity that HPS or MH lights use and produce more lumens per watt than fluorescent lighting. When you need a new light, think about whether you want an LED or not before making a purchase. It could save you money in the long run.

Another measurement relevant to DIY LED grow light enthusiasts is wall plug efficiency (WPE). This is a ratio of the amount of energy put in and the amount of light produced. This can be expressed as a percentage, such as 60% “wall plug efficiency,” which means that 60% of the electricity that goes through the light gets converted into light. The rest gets turned into heat that will need to be dealt with in the grow light itself as well as the room that houses the light.

It’s not typical to rate a grow light’s wall plug efficiency, but high-quality diodes made specifically for horticulture occasionally have this listed. For instance, high quality blue LEDs at 450nm can reach wall plug efficiencies of 60%, red LEDs at 660nm with 50% WPE, and green 530nm with 25% WPE. Wall plug efficiency can be calculated using a diode’s radiant flux (not luminous flux, which is a measure of how bright a light appears to the human eye and not how many photons it is producing) divided by the total wattage of electricity the diode uses. Remember to convert between milliwatt and watt, as necessary (1000 milliwatts = 1 watt).

Achieving High Efficiency

buying a grow light

LED grow lights are the most efficient type of grow light on the market, which means that they use less electricity and last longer. But all LED grow lights are not created equal. Here is some advice for buying an LED grow light that achieves high efficiency.

Brands increase their efficiency by having high quality diodes, running them at low energy, having excellent heat management, and using a high percent of the most efficient diode wavelengths. While some LED companies market themselves as having many different color LEDs, this can often be at sacrificed efficiency, since each color of LED has a different efficiency at producing light. For instance, 450nm, 660nm, and high kelvin white (white LEDs are 450nm with a phosphor coating) are very efficient, while green LEDs are not very efficient.

Intensity

The intensity of the light is measured in watts per square foot. A good rule of thumb is that you want at least 100 watts per square foot if you are growing anything other than leafy greens. If the light doesn’t say the intensity, it’s a good idea to ask for a sample before purchase so you can test it out.

While there are no doubt that grow light spectrum is important, some studies suggest that even more important than spectrum is light intensity. There are a number of ways of measuring the intensity of a grow light – some good and others bad.

Wattage

Choosing the wattage of a light is one of the most important considerations when buying a grow light. Here’s some guidelines to help you find what type of light you need.

This is the most common measure of grow light intensity and is a measure of electricity (watt = amp x volt). This measure can be misleading, though. Some manufacturers (the better ones) give the actual wattage the unit uses – the wall plug wattage. Others, typically lesser brands, will give you the max wattage rating of the LED diodes. To use a simple example, a grow light could call itself 90 watt if it has thirty 3 watt LED’s, however, it is common practice to run LED’s at half wattage to reduce heat production (and therefore heatsink cost) and increase efficiency. So, what was called a 90w grow light could really be 45w (or less!).

Bottom line, you want actual power draw, not LED wattage rating. It can be good to be suspicious of overly round numbers – you are likely getting the diode rating and not the actual power draw. Knowing the wattage of the diodes isn’t useless, though. You will get a heck of a lot more light out of a 3 watt diode run at 1 watt than a 1 watt diode run at 1 watt.

PPF

LED grow lights are the newest type of light on the market. They tend to be more efficient than other types of lights, which means you can use them for longer periods of time before they need a break. For example, if you’re using a traditional HID light that has a ppf rating of 400 (meaning it outputs 400 μmol/m2/sec), then in 10 hours you’ll use up all the energy from one bulb.

PPF (Photosynthetic Photon Flux) measures the total amount of light produced by a grow light in terms of micromoles of photons produced per second (often written as umol/s or μmol/s). This is an important number because unlike PPFD (which will be explained below) it can’t be manipulated and tells you the full amount of light coming from the LED grow light.

PPFD

The first thing you need to think about when buying a grow light is the type of grow light you need. There are two types of LED lights – those that use red and blue LEDs, and those that use white LEDs. You may want one over the other depending on what kind of plant you’re growing. A PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) tells you how many photons a given light produces per second in each nanometer of space.

PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) measures the amount of micromoles of photons striking a square meter per second (often written as umol/m2/s, μmol/m2/s, or μmolm-2s-1).

Full daylight sun at noon in the summer is around 2000 μmol/m2/s. What your plants actually need, however, is likely to be much less than that. Infact, because the Sun’s intensity is only that bright for a small portion of the day and because the angle of that intensity changes throughout the day, providing that much light for an extended period of time would very likely be damaging to your plant. A ‘light response curve’ shows how effectively a plant utilizes light at differing intensities. Depending on the plant, at levels greater than 800-1000 μmol/m2/s the efficiency that a plant uses the light starts to slow. Meaning, you can provide your plant more light than this, but you might not see a huge change in outcome.

It’s worth noting that some LED companies can increase their PPFD numbers by measuring extremely close to the grow light or using spot-light like reflectors or lenses. An LED company should always report what distance their PPFD numbers were taken at (e.g., 24 in, etc.).

buying a grow light

PAR

What type of grow light do you need? You need a specific type of light depending on the stage in which your plants are. Some LED lights are designed for seedlings, some for flowering and others for use when plants are about 3-4 weeks old. The best way to decide is by looking at the manufacturer’s label or by speaking with an expert from a reputable garden center.

Buy LED Grow Lights from a reputable company.

This is not a measurement at all, but instead, a type of light that can be absorbed by plants (and coincidentally seen by humans). It ranges from 400 to 700nm.

Lumens

One of the most important things you need to decide when buying a light is what type of grow light you need. Lumens are a measure of brightness, but they don’t tell the whole story – because it’s really about PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation). The best way to find out how many lumens you need is to look at the spectrum that your light emits. There are two types of PAR- Full Spectrum and Broad Spectrum.

This is a measure of the total apparent brightness of a light source and not how many photons are produced. As the cliche goes, “lumens are for humans.” You can think of it as the brightness of a single candle (although the real definition is more complex). By in large, lumens are not a useful measure of light intensity for plants since they overweight colors like green and underweight reds and blues. For instance, 1W of radiant flux at 550nm (green, which the human eye is very sensitive to) is 675 lumens. One watt of radiant flux at 660nm (deep red) is only 45 lumens. The red light will be more easily absorbed by your plant in photosynthesis than the green one, but your eye will see the green light as 15 times brighter than the red light!

Lux/Footcandle

These measure how much brightness is striking a unit of area.  Contrast this with lumen which is the total amount of brightness coming from the light source in all directions.  Lux = one lumen per meter squared.  Footcandle = one lumen per foot squared.

Spectrum

Photosynthesis – You need to choose a light that caters to the energy production of your plants.  The McCree curve and absorption peaks of photopigments are worth researching to learn more about this.

Photomorphogenesis – ‘Photo’ means ‘light’, ‘morpho’ means ‘shape,’ ‘genesis’ can be translated as ‘creation of.’  So, it’s using light to create a certain plant shape. Light can do a lot more than just change the growth pattern of a plant, though. It can trigger or delay flowering and fruiting, change chemical composition, among other diverse reactions.

Spectral terms relevant for white LEDs:

CRI

CRI (color rendering index) describes how “full spectrum” a light is and is typically only used for white LEDs.  This scale maxes out at 100.  “High CRI” means that a light is producing an abundance of each color within the visible spectrum and therefore “renders” objects illuminated by the light as the color that they would appear under full daylight (which is 100 CRI).   High CRI may sound more appealing, but there are instances where low CRI can be more desirable, since low CRI phosphors can be more efficient at producing light and run cooler

What “high CRI” typically translates to is more red and cyan than “low CRI.”  Not all light is created equal.

CCT

CCT (correlated color temperature) is a measure of how “warm” or “cool” a light source appears.  The scale represents the appearance of a glowing object at different temperatures, measured in the temperature scale of Kelvin (a scale commonly used in physics and chemistry, abbreviated as ‘K’).   For instance, if you were to place an iron rod within a furnace and heat it to 2700K its glow would have the same appearance as a 2700K lamp.  Higher Kelvin lights produce more blue and lower Kelvin lights produce more yellow, orange, and red.

buying a grow light

Footprint/Form Factor/Lenses/Reflectors

One of the many significant advantages of LEDs is that they offer greater control in light concentration and directionality.  As growers, we need to care about providing light to as much of our plants as possible to increase whole plant photosynthesis.  There are two ways that achieve that and which you choose will depend on your particular situation and crop.

The first way to get light deep into your canopy is to have a very concentrated light beam.  This is achieved by tightly packing your diodes together and by using reflectors and lenses to direct the light.  The other way, which may seem initially counterintuitive, is to provide multiple sources of very diffuse light.  By allowing the light to be cast at many angles on the plant, deep canopy penetration can also be achieved.

These different approaches, or some compromise in between, all affect how much area your grow light can effectively cover – its footprint.  Make sure that you have measured your grow space and that the lights you are looking at can properly cover that area.

Thermal Management

The cooler an LED stays the longer it will last and the higher its efficiency will be.  Most LED manufacturers recommend operating temperatures below 850C (1850F). To achieve this, there are two broad categories of heat management:

  • Active cooling – As the name implies, this involves expending energy to reduce a light’s temperature.  Fans blowing over a heat sink is the most common method.  Liquid cooling is another method that due to the high heat capacity of water has gained an avid following within the computing and lighting community.  It’s also how your car’s engine cools!
  •   Quality manufacturers have safeguards put into place that, in the unlikely event of a malfunction, protect the LEDs from overheating and turn off the light.
  • Passive cooling – This method doesn’t require energy to cool but can have higher upfront costs and heavier final product weight.  Factors that go into a high quality heatsink include material (e.g., aluminum), shape (e.g., pin fin), anodization, and production process (e.g., extrusion, cold forging, etc.).

buying a grow light

Total Cost of Ownership

If you plan on using your light for a while, LEDs are a better deal than HID.  High-end LEDs are more efficient than HID and have far more ability to provide a specific, tailored spectrum.  Lower energy consumption is not only good for you, but it’s good for the environment.  Don’t forget, too, the cost and hassle associated with changing bulbs for HID fixtures every year to six months.  A good LED light will last you many years, maintenance free.  If that wasn’t enough, you also don’t have to feel guilty about using a light that contains mercury and other toxic heavy metals like those contained in HID and fluorescent.

Wondering which LED grow light is right for you? Whether you’re trying to save money on your electric bill or are looking to start growing indoors, there are plenty of options available to you, and they come with their own sets of pros and cons. If you’re interested in making an informed purchase when it comes to LED grow lights, consider reading this article on LED grow light reviews firstly before pulling the trigger on your purchase. In conclusion will give you all the information you need to make an informed decision about which type of light would work best for your specific setup.

Spider Farmer SF7000

With peak PAR readings at 18 inches from plants of at least 1,000 μmol·m2·s, there’s no doubt that LED grow lights are a must-have if you want to maximize yield and produce however for a lower running cost. The SF7000 is one of Spider Farmer’s most advanced LED grow lights. Although it’s quite expensive, its performance is worth every penny. In fact, even though it’s pricey, it costs a third less than other competitive models that have similar power for example HLG models.

Mars Hydro SP6500

Mars Hydro SP6500 is a great choice if you are looking for an LED grow light that doesn’t burn too much energy. It is quite compact and uses low amounts of energy compared to the yield it produces, so it can easily be mounted on a regular lamp holder. Due to its smart design, you will be able to control it via just your smartphone. The manufacturer promises that their model won’t overheat even if you run it continuously for up to 24 hours a day.

Phlizon Dimmable 640W

Phlizon Dimmable 640W offers a good combination of features for a reasonable price. It’s one of the cheaper full-spectrum options on our list, but it doesn’t skimp on quality and will do a great job for your plants.

Conclusion

LED grow lights are a wonderful modern invention. LED grow lights allow us to have smaller, safer, and more productive growing environments for our plants. You can easily compare their benefits with any other type of lighting. A combination of LED lights with HID lights is even better! If you’re ready to get your garden started using LED light technology, we recommend that you check out our reviews above! Good luck!

How To Build a Simple Aquaponics System for under $200

Building a simple aquaponics system.

In this post I will explain how to build a simple Aquaponic system for under $200 that you can use anywhere in your house.

This system is a great small aquaponics system that can be easily placed in a cupboard, bathroom etc.

I have found this type of aquaponics system will give you fantastic results and will be quicker than other hydroponic methods.

This simple aquaponics system is great for beginners or someone just wanting to produce enough for themselves to enjoy

So firstly make sure you choose where you will place the system as you want a room that will stay around 23-26 degrees.

SIMPLE AQUAPONICS SYSTEM LIGHTING

I would look at choosing a light from a reputable lighting manufacturer for around the $100 mark in which AusGrowLights supplies the

Mars Hydro TS600 for $107 or the Spider Farmer SF300 for $102 or a bit more expensive a Spider Farmer SF600 for $140 which will take you a little bit over your budget. These lights are reliable and have the correct spectrum for a fantastic yield and healthy plants.

Ok now we have our LED lighting sorted now to make the system.

We need a water pump to put the water through the simple aquaponics system we found this water pump for $24 on Ebay not bad hey and this pump has now lasted over 2 years with no problems. Make sure water pump power is not too high power as as you don;t need a great deal of power 2500L P/H should be suitable.

Now lets check the budget

Still On Target thats great.

SIMPLE AQUAPONICS SYSTEM TUBING PIPES

You can go out and purchase your Tubing from your local hydroponics shop which will charge you probably around the $40 mark or you can shop smart and purchase your tubing from your local Hardware store for around $15 or even smarter purchase a garden hose from your local cheap shop for around $5 to $10 which will do the better than most others as garden hoses are normally pretty resilient to uv rays and will last longer.

What ever tubing you choose just make sure it is not clear or mold will grow in the tubing always use black or similiar to avoid this.

SIMPLE AQUAPONICS SYSTEM WATER RESERVOIR

So for the water Reservoir you need to hold around 10-15 L and you want the tank to be fairly flat not too high.

We solved this problem at our local cheap shop we bought a cat litter tray which hold around 15 L of water and is not too high perfect and the price is only $5 lol.

Now lets check the budget

  • Mars Hydro TS600 $107
  • Water Pump 2500L P/H $24
  • Tubing pipes $$8
  • Water reservoir $5
  • Total $144

SIMPLE AQUAPONICS SYSTEM CONNECTIONS

So we find using you simple hose connections works a treat and makes life easy connecting and disconnecting your simple aquaponics system.

As you can see in the photo we only used a splitter connection which make the two connections for us to use and we can also change the pressure in the lines so our system will work correctly. Then we require two hose connection for the splitter to connect the outgoing tubes.

We have used a splitter so we can have one tube going into our plant and the other one to help keep our nutrients mixed in the reservoir, you only need two connects as the other ends of the tube will be plugged into our watering system on the plant and the other will just sit in the reservoir.

So now where to purchase these at the best prices because we don’t want to blow the budget. I would check out your local cheap shops for the connection and you will get all for under $10 but you will need to think what will happen if one of the connections fails. Not fun cleaning up nutrients so maybe your local hardware store might be the preferred choice as you will obtain quality connections but for a price slightly more expensive, Our connections have been purchased for $18. Splitter $10 2x hose connections $8.

SIMPLE AQUAPONICS SYSTEM STAND AND LIGHT RACK

So for the setup of your simple aquaponics system stands and light rack you have many options because it is a simple setup you require.

We suggest for this you make a simple wooden base because wood to purchase is relatively cheap and very easy to work with. Cost $10.

For the light stand you can purchase pvc piping and connections from your local hardware store in which would cost you all up with connections around the $17 mark. Very easy to make and purchase and easy to take apart to store or move.

SIMPLE AQUAPONICS SYSTEM DRAINAGE

This is the easiest part of the setup and the cheapest because we only need 2 pot saucers 1 large and 1 small. and we will use a small piece of the hose as a drainage tube.

So what you will need to do is drill a hole large enough to squeeze the hose in and you want the hose to be just about flush with the bottom of the larger saucer.

Now drill holes all around the small saucer as we will be placing the small saucer over the hole we drilled in the large saucer, this is because we will sit the pot on top of the small saucer making a small reservoir to drain into the large reservoir.

Cost of setting up your drainage system is around $5 for the 2 saucers.

SYSTEM POT SETUP

So now we are looking for a even distribution for the water and you have 3 option for this.

  • Make a round tube by using a connector to connect the two ends of the tubing and a third to connect the water supply. $4
  • Free Flow Feed Ring $5-10
  • Hydro Halo feed Ring $15-20

Because I like to keep it simple I would suggest purchasing a free flow feed ring to keep cost down but the Hydro Halo Rings are awsome but more on cost.

Now all you need to do is put everything together and your away.

PS. I suggest to use as your medium Clay balls which is $20 for a large bag or lave rocks from your local hardware store for around $12 because this is the best way.

Total Cost For a Simple Aquaponics System

  • Mars Hydro TS600 $107
  • Water Pump 2500L P/H $24
  • Tubing pipes $8
  • Water reservoir $5
  • Connections $18
  • Stand and Rack $27
  • Drainage $5
  • Pot Setup $5
  • So total Cost of Simple Aquaponics System Is $199.

How awsome is this I hope to see you start your growing soon you won’t be disappointed
